6 Day Grassland and Desert Tour in the Middle Inner Mongolia

This 6-day private tour will start from Hohhot and end in Ordos, including the most highlights in the middle Inner Mongolia. You will have insight view of the nomadic life and culture by visiting a herdsman’s home on Xilamuren Grassland and try many interesting hands-on experiences with the herdsman. You will explore the hinterland of Kubuqi Desert in many fun and exciting ways.

Customizable Tour Itinerary

Your local guide and driver will wait for you with your name sign at the arrival hall of the Hohhot airport or Hohhot train station exit. They will transfer you to your hotel within 30mins. The rest time is on your own arrangement to explore Hohhot.

After breakfast, drive to the north of Hohhot about 2 hours to get the hinterland of Xilamuren Grassland. Upon arrival, be greeted by Mongolian welcome ceremony before embarking on a 5km light hike to admire the endless grasslands and wildflowers. It's time to immerse in the fresh air and relax on the vast grassland without crowds.

Visit a local herdsman’s home, dress up with Mongolian costumes, learn to make Mongolian lambs, and taste Mongolian snacks. After a local lunch, experience herdsmen's work, such as collecting cow dung, feeding lambs and making Mongolian milk tea.

Watch a 1.5 hours’ large-scale live performance, including Mongolian horse racing, wrestling and archery.

At night, enjoy a Mongolian-style Zhama Banquet dinner. Dress up in Mongolian costumes, watch Mongolian dancing and singing in a big yurt, and taste delicious Mongolian food. Join the campfire party on grassland.

Tips: If you visit Xilamuren Grassland in May or October, we recommend that you drive back to Hohhot for accommodation due to the low temperature of the grassland at night. We are glad to replace the grassland hiking with horse riding and archery experience.

In the morning, after enjoying the sunrise on the grassland, you will have a horse riding and archery experience. Drive to Kubuqi Desert to enjoy a beautiful desert sunset and BBQ dinner.

In the morning, you will have further exploration of the less-crowded Yemingsha Desert by hiking, 20 mins' desert camel riding, go karting and sand sliding. After a local lunch, you will drive to Erdos.

Kubuqi Desert Kubuqi Desert

After breakfast, you will drive one hour to the south of Erdos to visit the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan. It is a massive monument dedicated to the founder of the Mongol Empire Genghis Khan. The visit will takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Drive to Kangbashi city tourism area to enjoy the modern urban scenery of Ordos City. Visit the Genghis Khan Square and Erdos Museum to learn more about Mongolian history and culture and view the precious dinosaur fossils.

Tips: If your departure Erdos flight is the evening flight, you may end your tour today.

Your guide and driver will transfer you to the Ordos Airport or Railway Station and help you do the check-in.

  1. During the peak travel season, there are direct flights from Ordos to many domestic cities, like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an, Taiyuan and Nanjing. 
  2. If your departure flight is from Hohhot, we are glad to book you the 2 hours’ bullet train from Ordos to Hohhot or arrange you the private transfer (4.5 hours) back to Hohhot.
