It derives from the German term Seidenstraße (literally "Silk Road") and was first popularized by in 1877 by Ferdinand von Richthofen, who made seven expeditions to China from 1868 to 1872. However, the term itself has been in use in decades prior. The alternative translation "Silk Route" is also used occasionally. Silk Road started from China, went through five central Asian countries, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Greece and Italy etc. and reached the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Silk Road earned its name from Chinese silk, a highly valued commodity that merchants transported along these trade networks from the Han Dynasty.
Established when the Han Dynasty in China officially opened trade with the West in 130 B.C., the Silk Road routes remained in use until 1453 A.D., when the Ottoman Empire boycotted trade with China and closed them.
Xi’an, Lanzhou, Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang, Turpan, Urumqi and Kashgar are popular travel cities along the Silk Road.
If you travel along the Silk Road in China, Mogao Grottoes, Singing Sand Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring, Jiayuguan Pass, Colorful Danxia Landscape and the Ruins of Gaochang City etc. are unmissable.
Flights and trains are available in some cities, but automobile is more frequently used and common.
May and October are the best time to travel the Silk Road when the weather is quite mild, around 15 degrees Celsius. Summer can be searing hot while winter is freezing.
Silk Road is not used today, but still important due to its economic and cultural significance for many. It is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
